A Glimpse into the Wild Soul

A Frame That Found Me

This image comes from my ongoing Bannerghatta bus safari series, where every ride feels unpredictable. Not every sighting is dramatic, but some carry a quiet weight that stays longer than the rest. During one such ride, this sloth bear appeared, not in motion, not performing, just existing in its own space. There was something deeply absorbing about the way it held itself, almost disconnected from everything around it.

Working Within the Chaos of Movement

Shooting from inside a safari bus is always a test of timing and control. You cannot pause, you cannot reposition, and you definitely cannot ask for another moment. Everything depends on how quickly you react. I chose to stay close on the subject, locking onto the face and the paw. The textures, the fur, the small details all started to stand out more than a wide composition ever could. The background naturally softened, giving the subject its own space in the frame.

Refining the Mood in Lightroom Classic

Once I got back, the editing process was all about shaping the mood rather than changing the reality. In Lightroom Classic, I adjusted the exposure and tones to keep the natural depth intact. Using linear gradient masks, I controlled the light falloff around the edges, subtly pulling focus toward the subject. Selective tweaks to clarity and texture helped bring out the coarse detail of the fur. I slightly enhanced the eye, just enough to hold attention without making it look artificial.

Final Light Control in Photoshop

To finish the image, I moved into Photoshop and worked with a soft brush tool to create a portrait style vignette manually. This approach gave me precision over how the shadows build around the subject. It added a layer of depth and focus, making the frame feel more contained and immersive without overprocessing it.
